Epimedium Sagittatum, Maca Root & Others

Indications

This is a herbal supplement for men that combines Epimedium sagittatum (horny goat weed), Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) and other plant extracts. It is traditionally used to support sexual desire, erection quality, energy and stamina, and is sometimes used for tiredness and low mood. Scientific evidence is limited and mostly comes from small or animal studies. It is not a proven treatment for erectile dysfunction or infertility.

How It Works

Epimedium contains icariin, a plant compound that in laboratory studies relaxes blood vessel muscle and may increase blood flow, in a similar way to some erection medicines but much more weakly. Maca root is a food plant from the Andes that may improve sexual desire and wellbeing, although how it does this is not clear. The other herbs in such blends are usually included as general tonics.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label. These products are usually taken once or twice a day with water, with or after food. Do not take more than the label says, and stop if you notice unwanted effects. If there is no improvement after a few weeks, see a doctor, because erection problems can be an early sign of heart disease, diabetes or hormone problems.

Interactions

  • Nitrate medicines for chest pain, such as Glyceryl Trinitrate or Isosorbide Mononitrate: risk of a large drop in blood pressure.
  • Sildenafil, Tadalafil and similar medicines: effects may add together.
  • Medicines for high blood pressure: blood pressure may fall too much.
  • Blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel or Aspirin: Epimedium may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Thyroid medicines: Maca may affect thyroid function in some people.
  • Hormone treatments: possible hormone-like effects.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Use with nitrate medicines.
  • Children and adolescents.

Side Effects

Possible effects include dry mouth, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, nosebleeds, irritability and difficulty sleeping. Large doses of Epimedium over a long time have been linked with breathing problems and abnormal heart rhythm.

Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, difficulty breathing, an erection lasting more than four hours, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is intended for men. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as its safety has not been established.

  • See a doctor before use if you have heart disease, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, or a bleeding disorder.
  • Stop use at least two weeks before planned surgery.
  • Be careful with sexual enhancement products sold online, as some have been found to contain hidden prescription drugs.
  • Do not drink alcohol in large amounts while using it.
