Indications
This is an oral nutritional preparation containing essential amino acids, D-Sorbitol and electrolytes. It is used as a supplement to support nutrition and recovery in people with poor appetite, weakness, tiredness after illness or surgery, and in conditions where protein intake is low. Essential amino acids are the building blocks of protein that the body cannot make itself and must get from food.
How It Works
The essential amino acids help the body build and repair muscles, tissues, enzymes and hormones. D-Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that provides some energy and gives the liquid a sweet taste; it also has a mild laxative effect. The electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium and chloride, help keep the body’s fluid and salt balance and support normal nerve and muscle function.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. Syrups are usually taken by measured spoon two or three times a day, often before or with meals. Use the measuring cup or spoon provided, and shake well before use if the label says so.
Interactions
No important drug interactions are expected at normal doses. People taking medicines that raise potassium, such as Spironolactone or ACE inhibitors, or who are on a salt-restricted diet, should check with their doctor because of the electrolyte content.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient
- Hereditary fructose intolerance (because of Sorbitol)
- Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism, such as phenylketonuria, unless a doctor advises
- Severe kidney failure or severe liver disease with confusion, unless a doctor advises
- High blood potassium
Side Effects
Most people tolerate it well. Sorbitol may cause wind, bloating, stomach cramps or loose stools, especially at higher doses. Nausea may occur.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, severe or persistent diarrhoea, or muscle weakness with an irregular heartbeat.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Nutritional amino acid supplements are generally considered acceptable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but use only on a doctor’s advice.
Precautions and Warnings
People with diabetes should note that the product may contain sugars and sweeteners. Take care with kidney, liver or heart disease, or with a salt-restricted diet. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet; see a doctor if poor appetite, weight loss or weakness continues.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and dehydration. Drink fluids and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, especially in a child.
