Indications
Eucalyptol (also called cineole) is an oil taken from eucalyptus leaves. In Bangladesh it is used in antiseptic mouthwashes, together with Menthol, Thymol and Methyl Salicylate (some products also contain Sodium Fluoride). These mouthwashes help reduce dental plaque and gum inflammation (gingivitis), fight bad breath and freshen the mouth. They are used in addition to brushing and flossing, not instead of them.
How It Works
Eucalyptol, Thymol and Menthol are essential oils that break down the outer layer of germs in plaque, so fewer bacteria stay on the teeth and gums. Methyl Salicylate adds to this effect, and Sodium Fluoride, where present, helps strengthen tooth enamel against decay.
Dosage and Administration
Adults and children over 12 years: rinse the mouth with about 20 ml of the undiluted mouthwash for 30 seconds, twice a day after brushing, then spit it out. Do not swallow it. Follow the directions on the product label. Children under 12: only if the label or a dentist says it is suitable, and always with an adult watching.
Interactions
No important interactions are known when it is used as a mouthwash and spat out. If you also use a medicated mouthwash such as Chlorhexidine, ask your dentist how to space them.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Eucalyptol, Menthol, Thymol, Methyl Salicylate, aspirin-like medicines or any other ingredient.
- Young children who cannot rinse and spit reliably.
Side Effects
Some people feel burning or stinging in the mouth, a short-lived change in taste, dry mouth or mild irritation of the gums or tongue. Rarely, teeth or tongue may become slightly stained.
Get urgent medical help if a large amount is swallowed (especially by a child), or if there are signs of allergy such as swelling of the lips, tongue or face, rash or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
When used as a rinse and spat out, very little is absorbed, so it is generally considered acceptable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some products contain alcohol; ask your doctor or dentist if you are unsure which product to use.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not swallow. Keep the bottle away from children because Methyl Salicylate and alcohol are harmful if swallowed. If gum bleeding, mouth ulcers or bad breath last more than 2 weeks, see a dentist. It does not replace brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.
Overdose
Swallowing a large amount, especially by a child, can cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, fast breathing and confusion because of the Methyl Salicylate and alcohol. Seek emergency medical help straight away and take the bottle with you.
Therapeutic Class
