Indications
This is a herbal seed powder made from Fennel, Fenugreek, Cumin, Aniseed and Dill, common kitchen spices. Products of this kind are made mainly for breastfeeding mothers and are traditionally used to:
- Help support breast milk supply
- Ease wind, bloating and indigestion in the mother
- Improve appetite after childbirth
Scientific evidence that these seeds increase milk supply is limited. The most effective ways to build supply are frequent feeding, a good latch and skilled breastfeeding support.
How It Works
These seeds contain aromatic oils (such as anethole in fennel and aniseed) and plant compounds that are traditionally believed to encourage milk production; fenugreek is the most studied of them. The oils also relax the gut, helping wind pass and easing indigestion. Fenugreek adds soluble fibre.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label. The powder is usually mixed with warm water or milk and taken once or twice daily. Drink plenty of fluids. Do not take more than the label amount.
Interactions
- Diabetes medicines such as Insulin and Metformin: fenugreek may lower blood sugar further.
- Blood thinners such as Warfarin: fenugreek and other seeds may slightly increase bleeding risk.
- Other oral medicines: take them at least 2 hours apart, as the fibre may reduce absorption.
- Hormonal medicines: fennel and aniseed have weak oestrogen-like effects; ask your doctor.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy (fenugreek and concentrated fennel may stimulate the womb)
- Allergy to any of the seeds or related plants (carrot, celery, coriander family), or to peanuts and chickpeas (cross-reaction with fenugreek)
- Hormone-sensitive conditions, unless a doctor agrees
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Loose stools, wind or stomach upset in the mother
- A maple-syrup smell in sweat, urine or breast milk (harmless, from fenugreek)
- Low blood sugar in mothers with diabetes
- Allergic reactions
Watch the baby for fussiness, loose stools or rash. Get urgent medical help if the mother or baby develops swelling of the face, wheezing or difficulty breathing, or if the baby is unusually drowsy, feeds poorly or has fewer wet nappies.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy. It is intended for use during breastfeeding; talk to your doctor or a breastfeeding counsellor first, especially if your baby was premature or unwell.
Precautions and Warnings
- If milk supply seems low, check the baby’s weight gain and get breastfeeding support before relying on supplements.
- Mothers with diabetes, asthma or thyroid problems should ask a doctor first.
- Some products contain sugar or milk powder; check the label.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause diarrhoea, stomach upset and low blood sugar. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken or if a child has swallowed the product.
