Indications

Framycetin (also known as Neomycin B) is an antibiotic used on the surface of the body. Depending on the product, it is used for bacterial infections of the eye (conjunctivitis, blepharitis), the outer ear (otitis externa), and for infected or at-risk wounds, burns and ulcers as a medicated gauze dressing.

How It Works

Framycetin belongs to the aminoglycoside group of antibiotics. It enters bacteria and blocks the ribosome, the part of the cell that makes proteins, so the bacteria die. It acts against many common skin, eye and ear bacteria such as Staphylococcus and some Gram-negative germs. Very little is absorbed through healthy skin or the eye.

Dosage and Administration

Use exactly as directed on the label or by the doctor. Eye or ear drops are usually applied a few times a day for a short course, typically up to 7 days. Wash hands before and after use, do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, ear or any surface, and complete the course. Medicated gauze is placed directly on the cleaned wound and covered, and changed as directed.

Interactions

Interactions are unlikely with surface use. Avoid using with other ear or eye products at the same time unless advised; wait at least 5 minutes between different eye drops. Large-area use together with other medicines that can harm hearing or kidneys, such as Gentamicin, Furosemide or Vancomycin, should be avoided.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Framycetin, Neomycin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics
  • Ear drops: a perforated (torn) eardrum or grommets, because the medicine can damage hearing
  • Viral, fungal or tuberculous infections of the eye or ear, unless prescribed

Side Effects

Possible effects include temporary stinging, burning, itching or redness where it is applied. Allergic skin reactions (contact dermatitis) can develop, especially with long use. Long use can allow resistant germs or fungi to grow. If absorbed in large amounts, for example from large burns, it can damage hearing or the kidneys.

Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face or eyes, difficulty breathing, a spreading rash, loss of hearing, ringing in the ears, dizziness, or worsening pain or vision.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Small-area use is unlikely to harm the baby, but aminoglycosides can affect the hearing of an unborn baby if absorbed, so use in pregnancy only if the doctor advises. Short use on small areas during breastfeeding is generally considered acceptable; avoid applying to the breast.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not use for longer than advised. Stop and see a doctor if the infection does not improve in a few days or gets worse. Do not wear contact lenses during eye treatment. Avoid using on large open wounds or burns unless a doctor is supervising.

Overdose

Overdose from surface use is unlikely. If swallowed or used on large areas for a long time, contact a doctor; hearing and kidney function may need checking.

Therapeutic Class

Aminoglycoside antibiotic for topical (eye, ear and skin) use.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Discard eye or ear drops 4 weeks after opening.
