Indications
Galangal is the root (rhizome) of Alpinia galanga, a plant related to ginger, known in Unani as khulanjan. It is a common spice in South-East Asian cooking and an ingredient in Unani and Ayurvedic preparations. Traditionally it has been used for indigestion, wind, nausea and loss of appetite, for cough, sore throat and hoarseness, for joint pain, and as a male tonic. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Galangal contains aromatic oils (such as cineole) and plant compounds called flavonoids (such as galangin). These may help relieve wind and stimulate digestion, and in laboratory studies show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial effects. Its effects in people have not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take the product as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. As a spice in food, normal cooking amounts are considered safe.
Interactions
Medicinal amounts may increase stomach acid, which could reduce the effect of antacids and acid-reducing medicines such as Omeprazole. Like ginger, it might slightly increase bleeding risk with blood thinners such as Warfarin, and may lower blood sugar, so people on diabetes medicines should take care. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use.
Contraindications
Do not use it if you are allergic to galangal, ginger or related plants. Avoid medicinal amounts if you have active stomach ulcers or severe acid reflux.
Side Effects
Possible effects include heartburn, stomach irritation and a burning taste in the mouth. Allergic skin reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if you vomit blood or pass black stools, have severe stomach pain, or develop swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Galangal used in food is generally considered safe. Avoid medicinal amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as safety has not been established.
Precautions and Warnings
Stop medicinal use about two weeks before planned surgery. See a doctor for persistent indigestion, cough or joint pain. Buy products from reliable sources.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause stomach upset and burning. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or a child has swallowed a large amount.
Therapeutic Class
Unani and Ayurvedic herbal ingredient (traditional digestive, carminative and expectorant).
