Indications
Gelsemium sempervirens is a homeopathic preparation made from the yellow jasmine plant. In homeopathy it is traditionally used for weakness, trembling, heaviness of the limbs, nervous anxiety and nerve-related discomfort. In skin creams it is combined with other homeopathic ingredients and traditionally used to ease tingling, numbness and burning in the feet and legs, such as the nerve discomfort seen in diabetes. Scientific evidence for homeopathic remedies is limited, and it does not repair nerve damage or treat diabetes.
How It Works
Homeopathic preparations are made by diluting a starting substance many times. The idea is that a very diluted substance can help symptoms similar to those it causes in larger amounts. There is no proven scientific explanation for this. Important: the raw yellow jasmine plant is highly poisonous, and only properly made homeopathic dilutions should be used.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. For a cream, wash and dry the area and gently rub a thin layer into the affected skin, usually a few times a day. Do not apply to broken skin, wounds or ulcers. Wash your hands after use.
Interactions
No significant interactions with other medicines are known for topical homeopathic preparations. Continue your prescribed medicines, including diabetes treatment, as advised by your doctor.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- Broken, infected or ulcerated skin at the area of use.
- Never use raw plant material or home-made extracts of yellow jasmine.
Side Effects
Side effects with homeopathic creams are uncommon. Local redness, itching or rash may occur. Stop using it if irritation develops.
Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing. If any product containing yellow jasmine is swallowed in quantity and causes dizziness, double vision, drooping eyelids, muscle weakness or breathing difficulty, go to hospital immediately.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is little information on use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if a doctor or registered practitioner advises it, and do not apply it to the breast area when breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Numbness, tingling or burning in the feet needs a medical check, because it may be caused by diabetes, vitamin deficiency or other conditions. Do not replace prescribed treatment with homeopathy. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth. People with diabetes should check their feet daily.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with a homeopathic cream used on the skin. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, contact a doctor or hospital and take the pack with you.
