Indications
Gentian root is a bitter herbal ingredient used to stimulate appetite and help digestion. It is used for loss of appetite, a feeling of fullness, bloating and mild indigestion. It is usually found in appetiser and digestive syrups or tonics, combined with other herbs, enzymes or vitamins.
How It Works
Its strong bitter taste prompts the mouth, stomach and liver to release more saliva, stomach juice and bile. This can improve appetite and help the stomach break down food.
Dosage and Administration
Follow the dose on the label of the product, or your doctor’s advice. Bitter tonics are usually taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals. Give to children only products made for children, as advised.
Interactions
No important interactions are well known. Because it increases stomach acid, it may work against medicines that reduce acid, such as antacids, Famotidine and Omeprazole. Some liquid tonics contain alcohol; avoid these with Metronidazole and with medicines that cause drowsiness.
Contraindications
Allergy to gentian or any ingredient, and stomach or duodenal ulcer. Avoid if you have frequent heartburn or gastritis unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
Usually mild: headache, stomach irritation, heartburn or nausea.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, or severe stomach pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid unless your doctor advises it.
