Indications

Geothermal water is natural mineral water that comes from hot underground springs. It is used as the main base ingredient in some mouth care products (such as sprays, rinses and gels) and skin care products (such as facial mists and soothing sprays). These products are used to refresh and soothe the mouth, gums or skin, ease minor irritation and dryness, and support comfort after dental work or with sensitive skin.

How It Works

Thermal spring water contains dissolved minerals and trace elements such as calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, silica and selenium, depending on its source. These are thought to have a calming, moisturising and mildly anti-irritant effect on skin and the lining of the mouth. The water also acts as a gentle carrier for other active ingredients in the product. Scientific evidence for specific healing effects is limited, and the product is mainly a soothing and comfort aid.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label. Mouth sprays or rinses are usually used a few times a day, held in the mouth for a short time and then spat out or swallowed only if the label allows. Facial or skin sprays are sprayed from about 20 cm onto clean skin and left to dry or patted gently.

Interactions

Geothermal water itself is not known to interact with medicines. Some products also contain other ingredients, such as plant oils, antiseptics or fluoride, which may have their own cautions, so read the full ingredient list.

Contraindications

Do not use a product if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare. A few people may notice:

  • Mild stinging, redness or dryness where applied
  • An unusual taste in the mouth

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the lips, face or throat, a widespread rash, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Thermal spring water itself is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Check the other ingredients of the specific product, and ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Precautions and Warnings

These products soothe symptoms but do not treat infections, ulcers that do not heal, gum disease or skin diseases. See a dentist or doctor if a mouth sore or skin problem lasts more than 2 weeks or keeps coming back. Avoid spraying into the eyes. Supervise use in young children.

Overdose

Overuse of the water itself is not harmful. If a child swallows a large amount of a product that contains other ingredients, contact a doctor or poison centre.

Therapeutic Class

Oral care and skin care base ingredient (natural thermal spring water).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Do not puncture or burn pressurised spray cans.
