Indications
Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris, also called puncture vine) is an Ayurvedic herb. Its fruit is traditionally used to support the kidneys and urinary tract: to increase urine flow, to ease burning or difficult urination, and as a supporting remedy for small kidney or urinary stones. It is also traditionally used as a general tonic for strength and male sexual vitality. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not dissolve stones or cure kidney disease.
How It Works
In Ayurveda, Gokshura is described as a cooling herb that acts on the urinary system. It contains saponins, flavonoids and other plant compounds that may have a mild diuretic (water-passing) and anti-inflammatory effect. Its exact actions in people are not fully understood.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. Drink plenty of water during the day unless a doctor has told you to limit fluids.
Interactions
- It may lower blood sugar: people taking diabetes medicines (such as Metformin or insulin) should monitor their sugar levels.
- It may add to the effect of blood pressure medicines and diuretics (water tablets).
- It may affect how Lithium is cleared from the body.
- Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you take.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Known allergy to Tribulus or any other ingredient of the product.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions such as prostate cancer, unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated at normal amounts. Possible side effects include stomach upset, nausea, cramps, diarrhoea or constipation, and trouble sleeping. Rare reports of liver or kidney problems have been linked to high doses of Tribulus products.
Get urgent medical help if you have severe pain in the back or side, fever with painful urination, blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, as animal studies have raised concerns about effects on the unborn baby. Avoid during breastfeeding because its safety is unknown.
Precautions and Warnings
- Kidney stones and urinary symptoms need proper medical check-up. Do not rely on a herbal product alone if you have severe pain, fever or blood in the urine.
- People with diabetes, low blood pressure or kidney disease should talk to a doctor first.
- Not recommended for children unless a practitioner advises it.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset and, rarely, harm to the liver or kidneys. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken or if you feel unwell.
