Indications
Guggul is the purified gum resin of the Commiphora wightii (Commiphora mukul) tree, a well known ingredient in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine (Muqil in Unani). It is traditionally used in compound preparations for joint pain and swelling, for piles, for weight management and to help lower cholesterol. Modern studies on cholesterol have given mixed results, and scientific evidence for its other uses is limited.
How It Works
Guggul contains plant compounds called guggulsterones. These are thought to affect how the liver handles cholesterol and to have anti-inflammatory effects. In traditional medicine it is also believed to help shrink swollen piles and ease inflammation.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner, usually taken after meals with water. Only purified (shodhit) Guggul from a licensed manufacturer should be used; raw resin can irritate the stomach and skin.
Interactions
- It may reduce blood levels and effect of Propranolol and Diltiazem.
- It may increase bleeding risk with Warfarin, Aspirin, Clopidogrel and other blood thinners.
- It may affect thyroid hormone levels and thyroid medicines such as Levothyroxine.
- It may interact with hormone treatments, including oral contraceptives and oestrogen therapy.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Guggul or related resins.
- Pregnancy.
- Bleeding disorders, or within 2 weeks before surgery.
- Hormone sensitive conditions such as breast or uterine cancer or endometriosis, unless a doctor advises.
Side Effects
Stomach upset, nausea, loose stools, headache, hiccups and skin rash or itching can occur. Rarely, effects on the thyroid or menstrual cycle are reported.
Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), unusual bleeding or bruising, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, as it is traditionally thought to stimulate the womb and menstrual flow. Avoid during breastfeeding because safety is not known.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with thyroid disease, liver disease or on long term medicines should consult a doctor first.
- It is not a replacement for prescribed cholesterol or arthritis medicines; do not stop those without advice.
- Stop use and see a doctor if a rash develops.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause severe stomach upset, diarrhoea and headache. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken.
