Indications
Habb-e Yarqan is a Unani herbal pill; “yarqan” is the Unani word for jaundice. It is traditionally used as supportive care for jaundice, a weak or sluggish liver, loss of appetite and indigestion, and during recovery from liver illness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. Jaundice is a sign of an underlying illness, and this product must not replace medical diagnosis and treatment.
How It Works
The pills contain plant ingredients that Unani practitioners regard as liver protecting and bile promoting. Some herbs used in such formulas contain bitter substances that may increase the flow of bile (a digestive fluid made by the liver) and antioxidants that may protect liver cells in laboratory studies. How the combination works in people has not been properly studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually with water. Do not take more than the recommended amount. Continue any treatment your doctor has prescribed, and attend follow up blood tests.
Interactions
No specific interactions are well documented. Because the liver processes many medicines, people taking medicines such as anti tuberculosis drugs, epilepsy medicines, Methotrexate or high doses of Paracetamol should ask a doctor before adding herbal liver products. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any of the ingredients listed on the pack
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless a practitioner advises it
- Babies and young children, unless a doctor advises it
- Jaundice caused by a blocked bile duct, such as from gallstones
Side Effects
Side effects are not well recorded. Some people may have stomach upset, loose stools, nausea or allergic skin reactions.
Get urgent medical help if jaundice gets deeper or you notice confusion, unusual sleepiness, vomiting blood, black stools, a swollen abdomen, high fever with pain in the upper right abdomen, easy bruising or bleeding, or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Jaundice in pregnancy can be serious and needs urgent medical care. The safety of this product in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established; do not use it unless a qualified practitioner advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
Yellow skin or eyes can be caused by viral hepatitis, gallstones, medicines, alcohol and other conditions, and always needs a doctor’s assessment and blood tests. Jaundice in newborn babies needs prompt medical checking and must not be treated with herbal products. Rest, avoid alcohol and fatty food, and do not take unnecessary medicines during jaundice. Use only registered products from a reliable source.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea. If someone has taken much more than the recommended amount, or a child has swallowed the pills, contact a doctor or go to the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
