Indications

Hydrous Benzoyl Peroxide is used on the skin to treat mild to moderate acne, including blackheads, whiteheads and red, inflamed spots. It is commonly found in face and body washes, gels and creams.

How It Works

Benzoyl Peroxide releases oxygen into the pores, which kills the acne bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) that live there. It also gently peels the top layer of skin, helping to unblock pores and reduce oil build-up. Bacteria do not become resistant to it, so it is often combined with antibiotic acne treatments.

Dosage and Administration

For a wash: wet the affected skin, apply a small amount, lather gently for 1 to 2 minutes, then rinse well and pat dry. Use once daily at first, then up to twice daily if your skin tolerates it. For gels or creams, apply a thin layer to the affected areas as directed on the label. Results usually take 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Avoid the eyes, lips, inside of the nose and broken skin.
  • Wash your hands after use.

Interactions

Using it at the same time as Tretinoin or other strong peeling products can increase dryness and irritation; if both are prescribed, they are often used at different times of day. Avoid using other harsh soaps, scrubs or alcohol-based products on the same area. It may reduce the effect of topical Dapsone and cause temporary orange skin colour when used together.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Common effects are dryness, peeling, redness, mild burning or stinging, especially in the first weeks. It can bleach hair, clothing, towels and bedding. Rarely, a true allergy can occur with swelling, severe itching or hives.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, eyes, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or feeling faint.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Very little is absorbed through the skin, and it is generally considered acceptable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Still, check with your doctor first. When breastfeeding, do not apply it to the chest area.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Start with once-daily use to see how your skin reacts.
  • It makes skin more sensitive to sun: use sunscreen.
  • Rinse thoroughly, as it can bleach fabrics and hair.
  • If severe irritation occurs, reduce use or stop.

Overdose

Using too much or too often does not work faster and causes more redness and peeling. If swallowed by accident, contact a doctor or poison centre.

Therapeutic Class

Topical anti-acne agent (keratolytic and antibacterial).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the cap closed.
