Indications
Hydroxy Ethyl Cellulose is a water-soluble thickening agent made from plant cellulose. It is the main gel-forming ingredient in many water-based lubricating jellies. These gels are used to ease the insertion of medical instruments, catheters, gloved fingers during examinations and ultrasound probes, and as personal lubricants to relieve vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse. It is also used as a thickener in eye drops, creams and other medicines.
How It Works
When mixed with water, Hydroxy Ethyl Cellulose swells to form a smooth, clear, slippery gel. This gel reduces friction between surfaces without being absorbed into the body. It does not contain any active medicine, so it does not treat infection or disease.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label. Squeeze a small amount of gel onto the instrument, glove or skin and spread it over the area as needed. Reapply if the area becomes dry. It is water based, so it washes off easily with water. For medical procedures, health professionals apply it as part of the procedure.
Interactions
No interactions with medicines are known. Water-based gels are generally safe to use with latex and polyurethane condoms, unlike oil-based products. They do not contain a spermicide and do not protect against pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.
Contraindications
- Known allergy or sensitivity to any ingredient in the gel (including preservatives such as parabens).
- Do not use a non-sterile gel inside the body during sterile medical procedures; use a sterile product instead.
Side Effects
It is usually very well tolerated. Occasionally there may be mild irritation, itching or a burning feeling, often due to preservatives or other ingredients rather than the cellulose itself.
Get urgent medical help if you develop signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, widespread rash or difficulty breathing. Stop using it and see a doctor if irritation, unusual discharge or pain continues.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Hydroxy Ethyl Cellulose is not absorbed and is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some people trying to conceive prefer lubricants labelled as fertility-friendly; ask your doctor if this applies to you.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use and use on instruments only; do not swallow large amounts. Do not share tubes between people, and keep the nozzle clean to avoid spreading infection. Persistent vaginal dryness can have medical causes, such as menopause, so see a doctor if it does not improve. Keep it away from the eyes unless the product is made for eye use.
Overdose
Overuse on the skin is not harmful. Swallowing a small amount is unlikely to cause problems beyond mild stomach upset. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, contact a doctor.
Therapeutic Class
