Indications

Isopropyl Myristate is mainly an inactive ingredient (excipient). It is used in creams, lotions, ointments and some medicated skin products as an emollient, which means it softens and smooths the skin and helps the product spread easily. It is common in moisturisers for dry skin, eczema care products and some scalp and hair products. In some countries a solution containing Isopropyl Myristate is also used to treat head lice, because it coats the lice and stops them from working normally.

How It Works

Isopropyl Myristate is an oily liquid made from isopropyl alcohol and myristic acid, a fatty acid found in plant oils. On the skin it forms a light, non-greasy film that reduces water loss, so the skin stays softer. It also helps other ingredients in a product pass into the outer layer of the skin. Against head lice it works physically, by dissolving the waxy coat of the lice so they dry out.

Dosage and Administration

There is no dose for Isopropyl Myristate on its own. Use the product that contains it exactly as directed on the label or by your doctor. For moisturising creams and lotions, a thin layer is usually applied to clean, dry skin one to several times a day. For head lice products, follow the pack instructions on how long to leave the product on and when to repeat.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. Because it can increase how much of another ingredient passes into the skin, avoid applying other skin medicines on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to Isopropyl Myristate or any other ingredient of the product.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds or badly broken skin unless the product is made for that purpose.

Side Effects

It is usually very well tolerated. Some people may notice mild redness, itching or a stinging feeling. In people with acne-prone skin it may block pores and make spots worse. Allergic skin reactions are rare.

Stop using the product and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Very little is absorbed through the skin, and it is considered safe in skin products during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, do not apply it to the nipple area just before feeding. Ask your doctor before using medicated products during pregnancy.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Do not swallow.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes; if this happens, rinse well with water.
  • People with acne-prone skin may prefer products without it.
  • Some products are flammable; keep away from flames and heat.

Overdose

Overuse on the skin is unlikely to cause harm. If a product is swallowed by accident, especially by a child, contact a doctor or poison centre.
