What It Is Used For

Ivermectin treats some parasite infections: strongyloidiasis (threadworm of the gut), river blindness (onchocerciasis), and, as directed by a doctor, scabies and head lice. It is not a treatment for COVID-19 or other viral infections.

How to Take It

The dose depends on body weight, usually about 200 micrograms per kg as a single dose, with water on an empty stomach. For scabies a second dose is usually taken 1 to 2 weeks later. Wash bedding and clothes and treat close contacts at the same time.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to ivermectin. It is not given to children under 15 kg or during pregnancy.

Side Effects

Usually mild: dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, and itching or rash for a few days as the parasites die. Rarely: confusion or serious skin reactions.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have lived in Central or West Africa, as some infections there need special care, or if you have liver disease.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Do not take it in pregnancy. Ask your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.

Interactions

It can increase the effect of warfarin. Tell your doctor about all your medicines.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
