Indications
Jamani Arka is a traditional Unani and Ayurvedic distilled herbal water (arq) made from ajwain or carom seed (Trachyspermum ammi), sometimes with other digestive herbs. It is traditionally used for indigestion, gas, bloating, stomach cramps, loss of appetite and mild colicky stomach pain. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for any disease.
How It Works
Ajwain seeds contain an aromatic oil rich in thymol. Thymol is thought to relax the muscles of the gut (an antispasmodic effect), help release trapped gas, and increase the flow of digestive juices. It also has mild antimicrobial activity.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner, usually after meals. Measure each dose with the cup provided. Do not give to infants or young children unless a practitioner advises it.
Interactions
No serious interactions are well known at label amounts. In large amounts, ajwain may slow blood clotting and could add to the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin or Clopidogrel, and may slightly lower blood sugar in people on diabetes medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to ajwain or plants of the carrot family (such as cumin, fennel or celery).
- Active stomach ulcer or severe acid reflux, unless a doctor advises it.
- Infants and young children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated in label amounts. Some people may notice heartburn, a burning feeling in the stomach, nausea or, rarely, an allergic skin rash.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, severe or worsening stomach pain, repeated vomiting, or black or bloody stools.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Ajwain used as a kitchen spice is generally considered safe, but concentrated medicinal amounts are traditionally avoided in pregnancy. Use this product during pregnancy or breastfeeding only after advice from a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
See a doctor if stomach pain is severe, lasts more than a few days, keeps coming back, or comes with fever, vomiting, weight loss, difficulty swallowing or blood in the stool. Severe stomach pain in a baby or child always needs a doctor.
Overdose
Taking large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn and stomach pain. Seek medical help if a large amount has been swallowed, especially by a child.
