Indications
Kaolin is a natural clay (hydrated aluminium silicate). By mouth it is used, often combined with Pectin, to help relieve mild, short-term diarrhoea. It is also used on the skin as a dusting powder or poultice, and as an inactive ingredient (filler or adsorbent) in tablets and cosmetics.
How It Works
Kaolin is not absorbed into the body. In the gut it binds (adsorbs) water, some bacteria and toxins, and makes the stool firmer. It does not treat the cause of diarrhoea, and it does not replace lost fluid and salts.
Dosage and Administration
Take by mouth as directed on the label, usually after each loose stool for a short time. Shake suspensions well before use. The most important treatment for diarrhoea is replacing fluids with oral rehydration salts (ORS). Do not give to young children unless a doctor advises. If diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days, see a doctor.
Interactions
Kaolin can bind other medicines in the gut and reduce how much is absorbed, for example Digoxin, Lincomycin, Chloroquine, Tetracyclines, Quinidine and some antibiotics. Take other medicines at least 2 hours before or after Kaolin.
Contraindications
Do not use if you have a bowel blockage, bloody or black stools, or diarrhoea with high fever, unless a doctor advises. Avoid if you are allergic to any ingredient.
Side Effects
Kaolin is generally well tolerated. Constipation can occur, especially with large doses or long use.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of dehydration (very dry mouth, little or no urine, dizziness, confusion), blood in the stool, severe stomach pain or swelling, or high fever.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Kaolin is not absorbed and is generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding for short-term use, but ask a doctor first. Avoid eating clay or earth in pregnancy, as it can contain harmful substances and reduce iron absorption.
Precautions and Warnings
Use only for a short time. It can mask the loss of fluid in diarrhoea, so keep drinking ORS. Children and older people become dehydrated quickly and should see a doctor early. Use only pharmaceutical grade kaolin.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause constipation or, rarely, a bowel blockage. Seek medical help if severe stomach pain or vomiting occurs.
Therapeutic Class
Antidiarrhoeal adsorbent.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze suspensions.
