Indications
Khakshi (also spelled Khaksi) is the Unani name for the seeds of Sisymbrium irio, a small plant of the mustard family also known as London rocket or khubkalan. In Unani medicine the seeds are traditionally used to help bring down fever, for cough and chest congestion, and for sore throat. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a substitute for proper diagnosis of a fever.
How It Works
The seeds contain plant oils, flavonoids and mucilage (a gel-like fibre that soothes irritated throats). Small laboratory and animal studies suggest mild fever-lowering, anti-inflammatory and expectorant (mucus-loosening) effects. Its effects in people have not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. During a fever, rest and drink plenty of fluids.
Interactions
No important interactions are well documented. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take, including fever medicines such as Paracetamol and any blood thinners such as Warfarin, before using herbal products.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Sisymbrium irio, mustard or related plants.
- Pregnancy.
- Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea and, rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or itching.
Get urgent medical help if a fever is very high or lasts more than 3 days, or comes with a severe headache, stiff neck, rash that does not fade when pressed, difficulty breathing, confusion, fits (seizures), bleeding from the gums or nose, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy, as safety is not established. Safety during breastfeeding is also not known; ask a doctor before use. Fever in pregnancy should always be checked by a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
In Bangladesh, fever can be caused by dengue, typhoid, malaria or other infections that need testing and proper treatment. Do not rely on herbal products alone. Fever in babies, young children and older people should be checked promptly.
Overdose
No serious effects are well known, but large amounts may cause stomach upset. If a child swallows a large amount, get medical advice.
