Indications
Kurchi is the bark (and sometimes seeds, called Indrajab) of the Holarrhena antidysenterica tree. In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine it is traditionally used for diarrhoea and dysentery, especially amoebic dysentery, and for related stomach complaints such as cramps and piles. Its main alkaloid, Conessine, has shown activity against amoebae in laboratory studies, but good clinical evidence is limited, and modern medicines are preferred for proven infections.
How It Works
Kurchi bark contains several alkaloids, mainly Conessine. These are thought to act against amoebae and some bacteria in the gut, and the bark also has astringent (tightening) properties that may help reduce loose stools.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Use for short courses only. Drink plenty of fluids, and use oral rehydration salts (ORS) if diarrhoea is frequent.
Interactions
- No well studied drug interactions are known.
- Do not combine with other antidiarrhoeal medicines without advice.
- Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Kurchi.
- Bloody diarrhoea with high fever, severe dehydration or suspected bowel blockage, unless under medical care.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and young children without medical advice.
Side Effects
At usual amounts it is generally tolerated. Nausea, stomach discomfort, dizziness and restlessness may occur. Large amounts of the alkaloids can affect the nervous system and heart.
Get urgent medical help if diarrhoea is severe or bloody, if there are signs of dehydration (very little urine, dizziness, dry mouth), or if you develop confusion, fits, a very slow or irregular heartbeat or a serious allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. Avoid use unless advised by a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
- See a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days, or sooner for children, elderly people or anyone with blood in the stool or fever.
- Preventing dehydration with ORS is the most important step in diarrhoea.
- Do not exceed the label amount or use for long periods.
Overdose
Overdose may cause vomiting, dizziness, restlessness, slow heartbeat and, in severe cases, fits. Seek medical help promptly.
