Indications
Lanolin Anhydrous is a purified, water-free wax taken from sheep’s wool. It is used as a skin protectant and moisturiser for sore, dry or cracked nipples during breastfeeding, and for dry, rough or chapped skin and lips, cracked heels and minor skin dryness. It is also used as a base ingredient in many ointments and creams.
How It Works
Lanolin is an emollient (a skin softener) and occlusive. It forms a breathable, water-repellent layer on the skin that holds in the skin’s own moisture, keeps the area soft and supple, and creates a moist environment that helps small cracks heal. It can absorb about twice its weight in water.
Dosage and Administration
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin as often as needed, or as directed on the label. For nipple care, apply a small amount to the nipple and areola after each feed, smoothing it gently over the area. Highly purified lanolin made for breastfeeding does not usually need to be removed before the next feed. Wash your hands before and after use.
Interactions
No important interactions are known. Avoid applying other creams or ointments to the same area at the same time unless advised, as this may affect how they work.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to lanolin or wool alcohols.
- Infected skin or wounds, unless a doctor advises its use.
Side Effects
Lanolin is usually well tolerated. Some people, especially those with eczema or sensitive skin, may develop an allergic skin reaction with redness, itching, swelling or rash where it is applied.
Stop using and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a severe widespread rash. See a doctor if nipple pain is severe, the skin is bleeding, or there are signs of infection such as pus, fever, a hot red area on the breast or spreading redness.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Purified lanolin is commonly used during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is considered safe for this use. Choose a product made for nipple care, which is purified to remove impurities that could harm the baby.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only; avoid contact with the eyes.
- Test on a small patch of skin first if you have sensitive skin or eczema.
- Sore or cracked nipples are often caused by poor latch; ask a midwife, doctor or lactation adviser for help with positioning.
- See a doctor if the skin does not improve within 7 days or gets worse.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin is not harmful, though it may feel greasy. Swallowing a large amount may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if a child swallows a large amount.
