Latex Condom [Hero]

Indications

A latex condom is a thin sheath made of natural rubber latex that is worn on the erect penis during sex. It is used to prevent pregnancy and to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, syphilis and hepatitis B. It is one of the few contraceptive methods that also protects against infection.

How It Works

The condom forms a physical barrier that collects semen and stops sperm from entering the vagina, and reduces skin and fluid contact between partners, which lowers the spread of infections. With correct use every time, it is highly effective; with typical, less careful use, some pregnancies still occur, so consistent and correct use matters.

Dosage and Administration

  • Use a new condom for every act of sex, from start to finish; never reuse
  • Check the expiry date and that the packet is not damaged; open it carefully with fingers, not teeth or scissors
  • Pinch the tip to remove air and roll the condom all the way down the erect penis before any genital contact
  • Use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants
  • After ejaculation, hold the rim at the base while withdrawing before the penis softens, then wrap the used condom and dispose of it in the bin, not the toilet

Interactions

Oil-based products can weaken latex and cause breakage: petroleum jelly, baby oil, body lotions, cooking oils and some vaginal medicines such as certain antifungal creams or pessaries. Check with a pharmacist before using vaginal or penile medicines together with condoms. Do not use two condoms at the same time, as friction increases the chance of tearing.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to latex in either partner; non-latex (polyurethane or polyisoprene) condoms should be used instead

Side Effects

Most people have no problems. Mild irritation, itching or redness can occur, sometimes due to the lubricant or spermicide. People with latex sensitivity may develop rash or swelling.

Get urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or widespread rash. If a condom breaks or slips off, seek advice promptly about emergency contraception (best within 72 hours) and testing or preventive treatment for STIs, including HIV.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Condoms can be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and are recommended during pregnancy when there is any risk of STIs, to protect the mother and baby.

Precautions and Warnings

Condoms reduce but do not completely remove the risk of pregnancy and STIs, especially infections spread by skin contact such as herpes and genital warts. Do not store in a wallet or hot place. Do not use a condom that is brittle, sticky or discoloured.

Overdose

Not applicable.
