Indications

A latex condom is a thin sheath made of natural rubber latex that is worn on the erect penis during sex. It is used to help prevent pregnancy and to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis.

How It Works

The condom forms a physical barrier. It collects semen so that sperm cannot enter the vagina, and it reduces direct contact with body fluids and skin that can carry infections. Lubricated condoms reduce friction and the chance of tearing.

Dosage and Administration

Use a new condom every time you have sex, from start to finish. Check the expiry date and that the packet is not damaged. Open the packet carefully, without teeth or sharp objects. Pinch the tip to squeeze out air, place it on the erect penis and roll it all the way down. After ejaculation, hold the rim and withdraw while the penis is still erect, then remove the condom away from your partner, tie it and throw it in the bin. Never reuse a condom and never use two at once.

Interactions

Oil-based products such as baby oil, petroleum jelly, coconut oil, body lotions and some vaginal creams or pessaries (for example some containing Miconazole or Clotrimazole) can weaken latex and cause breakage. Use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants with latex condoms.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to natural rubber latex in either partner; use non-latex condoms (such as polyurethane or polyisoprene) instead
  • Allergy to the lubricant or spermicide used on the condom

Side Effects

Most people have no problems. Some may get mild itching, redness or irritation from the latex, lubricant or spermicide. Latex allergy can cause a rash or swelling.

Get urgent medical help if either partner has signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as widespread hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing. If a condom breaks or slips off, see a doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible about emergency contraception and STI or HIV testing and prevention.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Condoms can be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and they help protect against infections during pregnancy.

Precautions and Warnings

No method is 100 percent effective; correct and consistent use gives the best protection. Do not use a condom that is past its expiry date, sticky, brittle or damaged. Condoms do not fully protect against infections spread by skin contact, such as herpes or genital warts. Use enough water-based lubricant to reduce the risk of tearing.

Overdose

Not applicable. Using two condoms at once increases friction and the risk of breakage, so always use only one.
