Indications

A latex condom is a thin sheath made of natural rubber latex that is worn on the erect penis during sex. It is used to prevent pregnancy and to lower the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis. Some types are flavoured, dotted, ribbed or lubricated for comfort and pleasure.

How It Works

The condom forms a physical barrier that stops semen, and the germs carried in body fluids, from passing between partners. Used correctly every time, it is a reliable method; with typical use, some failures happen, mostly because of incorrect use.

Dosage and Administration

Use a new condom every time you have sex, from start to finish. Check the expiry date and that the pack is not damaged. Open the pack carefully with fingers, not teeth. Pinch the tip to leave space for semen and roll it down the full length of the erect penis. After ejaculation, hold the base while withdrawing, then remove it, tie it and throw it in the bin. Never reuse a condom or use two at once.

Interactions

Oil-based products such as petroleum jelly, baby oil, body lotions, coconut oil and some vaginal creams or pessaries (for example Miconazole or Clotrimazole preparations) can weaken latex and cause it to break. Use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to latex in either partner (use a non-latex condom instead)
  • Allergy to the flavour, lubricant or spermicide in the product

Side Effects

Some people get mild irritation, itching or redness, which may be due to the lubricant, flavouring or latex sensitivity.

Get urgent medical help if either partner develops swelling, widespread hives, wheezing or difficulty breathing after contact, which may be a serious latex allergy. If a condom breaks or slips, seek advice quickly about emergency contraception and STI testing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Condoms are safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and they help protect against STIs during this time.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not use flavoured condoms for vaginal sex if they contain sugar that may cause irritation; check the pack. Condoms do not protect fully against infections spread by skin contact, such as herpes or genital warts. Do not keep condoms in a wallet or hot place for long periods.

Overdose

Not applicable. If a condom is accidentally left inside the body, remove it gently and seek advice about emergency contraception and STI testing.
