Indications

Lavandula stoechas (French or Spanish lavender, known in Unani medicine as Ustukhuddus) is a flowering herb whose dried flowering tops are used in Unani and traditional Mediterranean medicine. In Unani medicine it is traditionally described as a brain tonic and is used for nervousness, low mood, anxiety, poor memory, headache, sleep problems and dizziness, and for cough and colds. It is often included in Unani compound preparations for the nerves and mind. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

The plant contains aromatic oils (such as fenchone and camphor), flavonoids and other compounds. Laboratory and animal studies suggest mild calming, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic (muscle relaxing) and antioxidant effects. In Unani theory it is believed to clear the brain of excess black bile, which was thought to cause low mood and anxiety. How well it works in people is not well proven.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Products containing it are usually taken once or twice a day with water. Do not swallow lavender essential oil, which is much stronger than the dried herb.

Interactions

  • Sedatives and sleeping medicines such as Diazepam, Clonazepam or Zolpidem, some antihistamines and alcohol: increased drowsiness.
  • Medicines for epilepsy: camphor in the oil may affect seizure control; ask a doctor.
  • Medicines for high blood pressure: possible extra lowering of blood pressure.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to lavender or related plants of the mint family.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless advised by a doctor.
  • Young children, unless advised by a practitioner.
  • History of seizures, for products containing the essential oil.

Side Effects

The dried herb is usually well tolerated in normal amounts. Possible effects include drowsiness, stomach upset, nausea, constipation, headache and increased appetite. Skin contact with the oil may cause irritation or allergy.

Get urgent medical help if you have a seizure, severe drowsiness or confusion, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it during these times unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Precautions and Warnings

  • It may make you sleepy; do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Anxiety, depression or memory problems can be signs of an illness that needs proper medical care; see a doctor if they are severe or continue.
  • Stop use about two weeks before planned surgery, because it may add to the effects of anaesthetic drugs.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause drowsiness, confusion, nausea and vomiting. Swallowing the essential oil can cause seizures, especially in children. If a large amount has been taken, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital immediately and take the pack with you.
