Indications
Light kaolin is a fine, purified white clay (natural hydrated aluminium silicate). In medicines it is mainly used as an inactive or supporting ingredient: in skin powders, sprays and pastes it absorbs moisture and helps dry and protect weeping wounds or burns, and it acts as a carrier and bulking agent. In the past it was also taken by mouth for diarrhoea, but this use is now uncommon.
How It Works
Kaolin particles have a large surface area. They soak up moisture, oils and some substances on the skin, forming a light protective layer. They also help spread the active medicine evenly when a product is sprayed or dusted on. Kaolin is not absorbed into the body through the skin.
Dosage and Administration
There is no separate dose for kaolin as an ingredient; follow the directions for the finished product. Products containing it are applied to the affected skin as directed on the label or by a doctor.
Interactions
- On the skin, no important interactions are known.
- When taken by mouth, kaolin can bind other medicines in the gut and reduce their absorption (for example Digoxin, Tetracyclines, Quinolones, Lincomycin and Chloroquine); doses should be separated by at least 2 hours.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- By mouth: bowel blockage, or diarrhoea with fever or blood unless advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Kaolin itself is very well tolerated. On the skin it may cause mild dryness. Breathing in large amounts of the dust over a long time can irritate the lungs. Taken by mouth, it can cause constipation.
Get urgent medical help if there is a severe skin reaction, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing after using a product containing it.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Kaolin is not absorbed through the skin and is considered safe as an ingredient. Follow the advice given for the active medicine in the product during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- Avoid inhaling powders or sprays; use in a well-ventilated area and keep away from the face.
- For external products, avoid contact with the eyes.
- Check the label for warnings about the main active medicine in the product.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely on the skin. Swallowing large amounts may cause constipation or, rarely, bowel blockage; seek medical advice.
Therapeutic Class
