Indications
Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), known in Unani medicine as Asl-us-Soos and in Bangla as Jashtimadhu, is the sweet root of a plant widely used in Unani and Ayurvedic preparations. It is traditionally used to soothe cough and sore throat, to ease acidity, indigestion and stomach discomfort, and as a mild laxative helper in compound preparations. It is also added to improve the taste of other herbal medicines. Scientific evidence for most of these uses is limited.
How It Works
Liquorice root contains glycyrrhizin and plant compounds called flavonoids. These are thought to soothe and coat irritated linings of the throat and stomach, loosen phlegm and have a mild anti-inflammatory effect. Glycyrrhizin also slows the breakdown of the body’s own cortisol, which can cause the body to keep salt and water and lose potassium when large amounts are taken for a long time.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Avoid high amounts and do not use for more than 4 to 6 weeks without medical advice. Deglycyrrhizinated liquorice (with the glycyrrhizin removed) has fewer side effects.
Interactions
- It may reduce the effect of medicines for high blood pressure and of diuretics (water tablets), and together with diuretics, corticosteroids or stimulant laxatives it increases the risk of low potassium.
- Low potassium raises the risk of toxicity with Digoxin.
- It may affect Warfarin and some hormone medicines, including oral contraceptives.
- Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take.
Contraindications
- High blood pressure, heart failure or heart rhythm problems.
- Kidney or liver disease, especially cirrhosis.
- Low potassium.
- Pregnancy.
Side Effects
At normal amounts for a short time it is usually well tolerated. Large amounts or long use can cause raised blood pressure, swelling of the legs, headache, low potassium and muscle weakness.
Get urgent medical help if you develop severe muscle weakness or cramps, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, severe headache, marked swelling or breathlessness.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy, as large amounts have been linked to early delivery and effects on the baby. During breastfeeding, avoid regular or large use; ask your doctor first.
Precautions and Warnings
- Liquorice is potent when used in large amounts or for long periods; stay within the label amount.
- People with diabetes, heart or kidney problems should consult a doctor first.
- Check blood pressure regularly if you use it often.
- Ask a doctor before giving to children.
Overdose
Taking large amounts can cause high blood pressure, fluid retention, very low potassium, muscle weakness and dangerous heart rhythm changes. Stop use and seek medical help.
