What It Is Used For

Losartan lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. It is also used to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, and in some people with heart failure.

How to Take It

Usually 50 mg once a day, with or without food. Some people start with 25 mg. The doctor may increase it to 100 mg a day. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop without asking your doctor.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to losartan, are pregnant, have severe liver disease, or have diabetes or kidney problems and take aliskiren.

Side Effects

Common: dizziness, especially when standing up, tiredness and high potassium in the blood. Rarely: swelling of the face, lips or tongue (get help at once), and changes in kidney function.

Precautions

Your doctor will check your kidney function and potassium. Dizziness is more likely if you are dehydrated from vomiting or diarrhoea, or take water tablets.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Do not take it in pregnancy; it can harm the baby. If you become pregnant, stop and see your doctor straight away. Not recommended while breastfeeding.

Interactions

Potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium and potassium-sparing diuretics (such as spironolactone) can raise potassium. Painkillers like ibuprofen and diclofenac can reduce its effect and harm the kidneys. It can raise lithium levels.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
