Indications
Lymecycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used mainly to treat moderate to severe acne, especially when creams alone have not worked. It is also used for some other infections caused by bacteria sensitive to tetracyclines, such as certain chest, skin and soft tissue infections.
How It Works
Lymecycline stops bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow. In acne it reduces the bacteria in blocked skin pores and also calms inflammation, so red spots and pus-filled spots slowly improve.
Dosage and Administration
Acne in adults and children over 12 years: usually 408 mg once daily, often for at least 8 to 12 weeks, or as prescribed. Other infections: as prescribed. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing up, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes afterwards. It may be taken with a light meal, but avoid milk and dairy at the same time.
Interactions
- Antacids, iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium supplements, and milk reduce absorption; take them at least 2 to 3 hours apart.
- Isotretinoin or other retinoid tablets increase the risk of raised pressure in the skull; do not combine.
- It may increase the effect of Warfarin.
- Penicillins may work less well when used together.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any tetracycline.
- Children under 12 years, because it can stain developing teeth.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Severe kidney disease.
- Use with oral retinoids.
Side Effects
Common: nausea, tummy pain, diarrhoea and headache. Less common: skin sensitivity to sunlight, rash and vaginal thrush. Rare: severe headache with blurred vision (raised pressure in the skull), liver problems and severe allergy.
Get urgent medical help for severe or persistent headache with vision changes, swelling of the face or throat, a blistering rash, yellow skin or eyes, or severe watery or bloody diarrhoea.
