Indications
Marham Jadeed is a Unani herbal ointment for external use. It is traditionally used to ease the discomfort of piles (haemorrhoids, swollen veins around the back passage), such as itching, burning, soreness and mild swelling, and to soothe the skin around the anus. Scientific evidence for traditional ointments of this kind is limited, and it does not cure piles.
How It Works
In Unani medicine, the herbal and mineral ingredients in this ointment are believed to have soothing, astringent (tightening) and drying effects on swollen, irritated tissue. A greasy ointment base also protects the sore skin from friction during bowel movements. The exact ingredients can differ between makers, so check the label.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually applied in a thin layer to the affected area after washing and gently drying it, often after each bowel movement and at bedtime.
- For external use only. Do not swallow.
- Wash your hands before and after use.
- Eating more fibre, drinking enough water and avoiding straining on the toilet also help piles.
Interactions
Interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely because it is used on the skin. Avoid using other creams or ointments on the same area at the same time unless a doctor advises it.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient of the ointment.
- Open wounds, an abscess or infected skin around the anus unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
Most people use it without problems. Some may get local burning, stinging, redness, itching or a skin rash. Stop using it if irritation gets worse.
Get urgent medical help if you have heavy or continuing bleeding from the back passage, black or tarry stools, severe pain, fever, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Piles are common in pregnancy. Because the safety of this herbal ointment in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied, use it only after asking a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
- Bleeding from the back passage can also be caused by other conditions, including bowel cancer. See a doctor if you have bleeding, a change in bowel habit, weight loss, or if symptoms last more than one week.
- Keep it away from the eyes.
- Not for use in children unless a doctor advises it.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause serious harm but may increase irritation. If it is swallowed by accident, especially by a child, contact a doctor or poison centre.
