Indications

Marwareedi preparations are Unani medicines based on pearl (marwareed), which is mostly natural calcium carbonate, often processed into a fine ash or paste with other ingredients. They are traditionally used as a calcium source, as a tonic for general weakness and palpitations, and to soothe excess stomach acid. Scientific evidence for the traditional tonic uses is limited, and the product is not a cure for heart disease, osteoporosis or other illnesses.

How It Works

The calcium carbonate in pearl provides calcium, a mineral needed for strong bones and teeth and for normal muscle and nerve function. In the stomach, calcium carbonate also neutralises acid, which may relieve heartburn and indigestion.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually taken after meals. Do not take more than the label amount, and do not give to children unless a practitioner advises it.

Interactions

Calcium can reduce the absorption of several medicines, including Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin and other quinolone antibiotics, Levothyroxine, iron tablets and bisphosphonates such as Alendronate. Take these at least 2 hours apart from this product, or as your doctor advises. Taking it with thiazide water tablets or large doses of vitamin D may raise blood calcium. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • High blood calcium (hypercalcaemia).
  • Calcium-containing kidney stones.
  • Severe kidney disease, unless a doctor advises it.
  • Allergy to any ingredient.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include constipation, bloating, gas and mild stomach upset.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, severe constipation with vomiting, confusion, extreme thirst or passing large amounts of urine, or chest pain or a racing heartbeat.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Calcium is often needed in pregnancy, but the purity and content of traditional pearl preparations can vary. Use only after advice from a doctor, who may prefer a standard calcium supplement.

Precautions and Warnings

Palpitations, chest pain or breathlessness need a doctor, as they may be signs of heart problems. Do not take with other calcium or antacid products unless advised. People with kidney disease or a history of kidney stones should talk to a doctor first. Buy only from a trusted source, as poorly made mineral ash products may contain impurities.

Overdose

Too much calcium may cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, tiredness, confusion, extreme thirst and an irregular heartbeat. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken.

Therapeutic Class

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed.
