Indications
The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) produces a fragrant resin called mastic gum, known in Unani medicine as mastagi or rumi mastagi. It is traditionally used to support digestion and to ease indigestion, stomach discomfort, acidity and stomach or duodenal ulcers, and it is also chewed for fresh breath and gum health. Some small studies suggest it may ease indigestion symptoms and have activity against Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium linked with ulcers, but it does not replace standard ulcer treatment.
How It Works
Mastic resin contains natural compounds (triterpenes and essential oils) that have shown antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in laboratory studies. It is thought to help protect the stomach lining and to reduce the growth of Helicobacter pylori and bacteria in the mouth.
Dosage and Administration
It is usually taken as part of combined Unani products. Take only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually before or after meals as the label advises. Do not exceed the stated amount.
Interactions
No important interactions are well established. As a precaution, tell your doctor if you take other medicines for the stomach, blood thinners such as Warfarin, or many other regular medicines.
Contraindications
- Allergy to mastic or to plants of the same family, such as pistachio, cashew or mango, or to any other ingredient.
Side Effects
Mastic is generally well tolerated. Mild nausea, headache, dizziness or stomach upset may occur, and allergic reactions are possible in sensitive people.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, or sudden severe tummy pain, as these can be signs of a bleeding or perforated ulcer.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for medicinal amounts during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ask a doctor before use.
Precautions and Warnings
Stomach ulcers and long-lasting indigestion need a doctor’s assessment; Helicobacter pylori infection is best treated with prescribed antibiotics and acid-reducing medicines. People over 40 with new indigestion, weight loss, vomiting or difficulty swallowing should see a doctor promptly.
Overdose
Taking far more than directed may cause nausea or stomach upset. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe and take the pack with you.
