Indications

Melaleuca Alternifolia Oil (tea tree oil) is a plant oil used on the skin. It is traditionally and commonly used for mild acne, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, dandruff, and mild fungal skin problems such as athlete’s foot. Scientific evidence is moderate for mild acne and limited for other uses.

How It Works

Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of an Australian tree. Its main active part, terpinen-4-ol, can damage the outer layer of bacteria and fungi, slowing their growth. It also has a mild soothing effect on inflamed skin.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Use as directed on the label: products usually contain about 5% tea tree oil and are applied thinly to clean, dry skin once or twice a day. Pure (100%) oil should not be put directly on the skin; it must be diluted. Wash hands after use.

Interactions

  • No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known.
  • Using it with other strong skin products (such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Retinoids or alcohol-based toners) may increase dryness and irritation.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to tea tree oil or related plant oils.
  • Must never be swallowed.
  • Do not use on broken, badly damaged or very inflamed skin, or near the eyes.

Side Effects

It may cause dryness, itching, stinging, redness or skin peeling. Some people develop an allergic skin rash (contact dermatitis), especially with old, oxidised oil. Stop using it if irritation develops.

Get urgent medical help if the oil is swallowed (it can cause confusion, unsteadiness and drowsiness), or if there is a severe rash, blistering, or swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Diluted products applied to small areas of skin are not expected to be harmful, but safety has not been well studied. Ask a doctor before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and do not apply to the breast or nipple area before feeding.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do a patch test on a small area first.
  • Keep away from eyes, mouth and inside the nose and ears.
  • Not for use in infants and young children without medical advice; keep bottles well away from children.
  • See a doctor if the skin problem does not improve within a few weeks.

Overdose

Swallowing tea tree oil is poisonous and can cause vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, unsteadiness and in severe cases coma, especially in children. Seek emergency help straight away. Too much on the skin causes irritation; wash it off with soap and water.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal topical antiseptic (essential oil).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a tightly closed bottle, away from light and air (old or oxidised oil is more irritating). Keep out of the reach of children.
