Indications
Molnupiravir is an oral antiviral medicine for mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults who have a positive test and a high risk of becoming seriously ill (for example older age, obesity, diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease, or a weak immune system), when other treatments are not suitable or available. It is not for preventing COVID-19 and does not replace vaccination.
How It Works
Molnupiravir is changed in the body into a substance that the coronavirus mistakenly uses when copying its genetic material. This causes many errors in the virus copies so they cannot multiply properly, which lowers the amount of virus in the body.
Dosage and Administration
The usual adult dose is 800 mg (four 200 mg capsules) every 12 hours for 5 days, with or without food, or as prescribed. Start as soon as possible and within 5 days of the first symptoms. Swallow capsules whole. Complete the full 5-day course. It is not used in people under 18 years.
Interactions
No important interactions with other medicines are known so far. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to molnupiravir or any ingredient
- Pregnancy
- Children and adolescents under 18 years
Side Effects
Side effects are usually mild and may include diarrhoea, nausea, dizziness and headache.
Get urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction such as rash with swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing, and also if COVID-19 symptoms get worse: increasing breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, bluish lips or low oxygen levels.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use in pregnancy, as animal studies showed harm to the unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use reliable contraception during treatment and for 4 days after the last dose. Men with a partner who could become pregnant should use reliable contraception during treatment and for at least 3 months after the last dose. Do not breastfeed during treatment and for 4 days after the last dose.
Precautions and Warnings
A pregnancy test may be advised before starting. Keep isolating and follow local public health advice while you are infectious. Continue other regular medicines unless told otherwise.
Overdose
There is little experience with overdose. Seek medical advice; treatment is supportive.
