Indications
This is an A to Z multivitamin and multimineral preparation for infants and children, usually given as drops or syrup. It is used to help prevent and correct vitamin and mineral deficiencies in babies and young children, for example in those with poor feeding, low birth weight, during weaning, during rapid growth or after illness, when a doctor or the label recommends it.
How It Works
It provides vitamins such as A, B group, C, D and E and minerals such as zinc and, in some formulas, iron and iodine. These nutrients support normal growth, bone development (vitamin D with calcium), healthy eyes and skin (vitamin A), red blood cell formation (iron, folic acid, vitamin B12), brain development and a healthy immune system (zinc, vitamin C).
Dosage and Administration
Give exactly as directed on the label or by your doctor; the amount depends on the child’s age and weight. Drops are usually given once a day with the dropper provided, either directly into the mouth or mixed with a little milk or food. Syrups are measured with the cup or spoon provided. Shake well before use. Do not give more than recommended.
Interactions
If the product contains iron or zinc, it can reduce absorption of some antibiotics such as Tetracycline or Ciprofloxacin; keep them at least 2 hours apart. Do not combine with other vitamin A or vitamin D products unless your doctor advises, to avoid giving too much.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient
- High blood calcium or high levels of vitamin A or D
- Iron overload conditions, if the product contains iron
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some babies may spit up, have mild stomach upset, loose stools or constipation. Iron-containing products can make stools darker and may temporarily stain teeth.
Get urgent medical help if the child has signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, has swallowed a large amount, or becomes very drowsy, vomits repeatedly or has severe diarrhoea.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is made for infants and children. Breastfeeding mothers should take a supplement designed for adults if advised by their doctor; breastfed babies may still need vitamin D drops as advised by the doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
Premature babies and children with kidney, liver or blood disorders should use it only on medical advice. Too much vitamin A, vitamin D or iron is harmful to young children, so measure doses carefully and keep the bottle out of reach. Supplements do not replace breast milk, formula or a balanced diet.
Overdose
Accidental overdose, especially of iron-containing drops, can be dangerous in small children and may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and drowsiness. Seek medical help immediately, even if the child seems well.
