Multivitamin & Multimineral [a-Z for Infant & Children]

Indications

This is a multivitamin and multimineral powder in single-dose sachets for infants and young children. It is mixed into the child’s food to help prevent and treat deficiencies of vitamins and minerals, especially iron deficiency anaemia, and to support healthy growth, development and immunity. It is mainly used for children from 6 months of age once they have started complementary (semi-solid) foods, or as advised by a doctor.

How It Works

Each sachet provides small amounts of important micronutrients, usually including iron, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid, vitamin B12 and other vitamins and minerals. When sprinkled on food, these nutrients are absorbed along with the meal. Iron helps make haemoglobin for healthy blood, zinc supports growth and immunity, vitamin A protects vision and resistance to infection, and vitamin C improves iron absorption.

Dosage and Administration

Usually 1 sachet a day, or as directed on the label or by a doctor or health worker. Mix the whole sachet into a small portion of the child’s soft or semi-solid food (such as khichuri, mashed rice, porridge) after it has been cooked and cooled to eating temperature. Make sure the child eats this portion first, within 30 minutes. Do not add to hot food, liquids or milk bottles, and do not cook the powder.

Interactions

  • Do not give with other iron or vitamin supplements unless advised, to avoid too high a dose
  • Iron and zinc can reduce absorption of some antibiotics, so space them apart if the child is prescribed one

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient
  • Conditions with iron overload, such as children with thalassaemia major who receive regular blood transfusions, unless the doctor advises
  • Children with severe acute malnutrition who are receiving therapeutic foods that already contain these nutrients

Side Effects

Most children have no problems. Darker stools, mild constipation or loose stools may occur because of the iron. The food may darken slightly if it is left standing; this is harmless.

Get urgent medical help if a child swallows several sachets at once, or shows vomiting, severe diarrhoea, drowsiness, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is made for infants and children and is not intended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, who should use supplements recommended for them. Breastfeeding of the child should continue alongside its use.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not give to babies under 6 months. Keep sachets away from children to prevent accidental overdose; too much iron is dangerous for young children. In malaria-endemic areas, use according to local health guidance. Continue a balanced diet; the powder supplements food but does not replace it.

Overdose

Swallowing many sachets can cause iron poisoning, with vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and drowsiness. Seek medical help at once and take the pack with you.

Therapeutic Class

Micronutrient powder; multivitamin and multimineral supplement for children.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children. Use each sachet once opened.
