Indications

This multivitamin and multimineral syrup is a nutritional supplement for children. It is used to prevent and correct vitamin and mineral shortfalls caused by poor appetite, picky eating, an unbalanced diet, fast growth, or recovery after illness. It supports normal growth and development but does not replace a balanced diet.

How It Works

The syrup supplies a mix of vitamins (such as vitamins A, B group, C, D and E) and minerals (such as zinc, iron, calcium or iodine, depending on the product) that the body needs in small amounts. These nutrients help the body make energy, build bones, blood and tissues, and keep the immune system working normally.

Dosage and Administration

Give by mouth using the measuring cup or spoon supplied. Follow the dose on the pack or the doctor’s advice; for most children it is usually 5 ml once a day. Do not give more than the recommended dose, and check with a doctor before using it in babies or young infants. Shake well before use. It can be given with or after food.

Interactions

Do not give it together with other vitamin or mineral supplements unless a doctor advises, as this can lead to too much vitamin A, vitamin D or iron. Minerals such as iron, calcium and zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (such as Tetracycline, Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin) and of Levothyroxine; keep a gap of at least 2 hours between them.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
  • Conditions where the body already has too much of a vitamin or mineral, such as high blood calcium or iron overload.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some children may have mild stomach upset, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, and stools may turn dark if the product contains iron. Get urgent medical help if a child shows signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing) or has swallowed a large amount of the syrup.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This preparation is made for children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use a supplement designed for pregnancy, as advised by their doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

Talk to a doctor before use if the child has kidney or liver disease or a long-term illness, or is taking other medicines or supplements. A supplement cannot treat a medical cause of poor growth or poor appetite; see a doctor if these continue. Some syrups contain sugar, so clean the teeth after use and take care in children with diabetes.

Overdose

Swallowing a large amount can be dangerous for young children, especially if the product contains iron. Signs include vomiting, stomach pain and drowsiness. Take the child to a hospital straight away and bring the bottle. Long-term high doses can cause vitamin A or vitamin D toxicity.

Therapeutic Class

Multivitamin and multimineral preparation (nutritional supplement).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze. After opening, use within the period stated on the pack.
