  • 3 companies

Indications

This is a multivitamin and multimineral syrup containing a wide range of vitamins (A to Z type formula, such as vitamins A, B group, C, D and E) and minerals (such as zinc, iron, iodine or calcium, depending on the product). It is used to support nutrition in children and adults with poor appetite, picky eating, during recovery from illness, and to prevent or treat mild vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

How It Works

It tops up vitamins and minerals that may be low in the diet. These nutrients help the body make energy, build blood and bones, support growth and keep the immune system, skin and nerves working normally.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by your doctor, using the measuring cup or spoon provided. Usually it is taken once a day after a meal; the amount depends on age. Shake the bottle well before use. Do not give more than the recommended dose.

Interactions

Minerals such as iron, zinc and calcium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (for example Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline) and Levothyroxine; take these at least 2 hours apart. Vitamin K content, if present, can affect Warfarin. Avoid taking other vitamin A or D products at the same time unless advised.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient
  • Iron overload conditions (such as haemochromatosis or repeated transfusions in thalassaemia) if the product contains iron
  • High blood calcium or excess vitamin A or D

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Mild nausea, stomach upset, constipation or dark stools (if it contains iron) and bright yellow urine may occur.

Get urgent medical help if a child swallows a large amount, or if there is swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

General multivitamin syrups are not designed for pregnancy. Pregnant women should use a product made for pregnancy and avoid high doses of vitamin A. Ask your doctor during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

A supplement does not replace a balanced diet. Keep out of reach of children, as overdose of iron and vitamin A or D can be dangerous. People with diabetes should note any sugar content on the label. Tell your doctor about kidney or liver disease.

Overdose

Large overdoses, especially of products containing iron, can cause vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and can be serious in children. Seek medical help at once and take the bottle with you.

Therapeutic Class

Vitamin and mineral supplement.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Close the cap tightly after use and use within the time stated on the label after opening.
