Indications
This is a multivitamin and multimineral syrup, usually made for children, that contains a broad range of vitamins (such as vitamins A, B group, C, D and E) and minerals (such as Zinc, Iron, Calcium and Iodine; exact contents vary by product). It is used to prevent or correct vitamin and mineral shortfalls in children with poor appetite, picky eating or an unbalanced diet, during recovery from illness, and during periods of fast growth.
How It Works
Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts for growth, energy production, healthy blood, bones, skin, eyes and immunity. When the diet does not supply enough, a supplement helps fill the gap. It is not a substitute for a balanced diet.
Dosage and Administration
Give by mouth as directed on the label or by your doctor, using the measuring cup or spoon supplied. The amount depends on the child’s age. It is usually taken once a day, preferably after a meal. Shake the bottle well before use. Do not give more than the recommended amount, and do not combine it with other vitamin or mineral products unless a doctor advises.
Interactions
- Iron, Calcium and Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline and Tetracycline, and of Levothyroxine; leave at least 2 hours between them.
- Other supplements containing vitamin A, vitamin D or Iron can lead to taking too much.
- Vitamin K content, if present, may affect Warfarin.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient.
- Conditions with excess of a contained nutrient, such as too much vitamin A or D, high blood calcium, or iron overload (for example thalassaemia with frequent transfusions or haemochromatosis), unless a doctor advises.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Some children may have mild stomach upset, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, or dark stools if the syrup contains Iron. Urine may turn bright yellow because of vitamin B2, which is harmless. Allergic reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if a child swallows a large amount, or develops vomiting, severe stomach pain, drowsiness, a rash with swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Children’s syrups are not designed for pregnancy. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use a supplement made for pregnancy as advised by their doctor, because high doses of vitamin A can harm an unborn baby.
Precautions and Warnings
Keep out of the reach of children: accidental overdose of products containing Iron is a leading cause of poisoning in young children. Check sugar content for children with diabetes. Long lasting tiredness, paleness or poor growth should be checked by a doctor rather than treated with supplements alone.
Overdose
Too much can cause vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Iron overdose can be dangerous, and long term excess of vitamins A or D can harm the liver, bones and kidneys. Seek medical help at once if a large amount is swallowed.
