Indications
This multivitamin and multimineral preparation is formulated for teenage girls. It is used to support normal growth and development during the teenage years, to help replace iron lost through monthly periods, to help fill nutritional gaps when the diet is poor, irregular or restricted (for example dieting or skipping meals), and to support energy, bones, skin, hair and immunity.
How It Works
It provides a balanced mix of vitamins (such as vitamins A, B group including Folic Acid, C, D and E) and minerals (such as iron, calcium, zinc and magnesium) in amounts suited to adolescent girls. Iron and Folic Acid help make healthy red blood cells and prevent anaemia, calcium and vitamin D build strong bones during the years when bone mass is gained, and B vitamins help turn food into energy. It supplements a healthy diet and does not replace it.
Dosage and Administration
Usually one tablet a day with a meal and a glass of water, or as directed on the label or by a doctor. Taking it with food improves absorption and reduces stomach upset. Do not take more than the recommended daily amount.
Interactions
- Iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc can reduce absorption of some antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline and Tetracycline) and of Levothyroxine; keep at least 2 to 4 hours apart.
- Tea, coffee and milk taken at the same time can reduce iron absorption.
- Avoid taking other vitamin or iron supplements at the same time unless a doctor advises it.
- Vitamin K, if present, may affect blood thinners such as Warfarin.
Contraindications
Do not take if allergic to any ingredient, or if you have a condition with iron or calcium overload (such as haemochromatosis, thalassaemia with iron overload, or high blood calcium), unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Some people may get mild nausea, stomach upset, constipation or dark stools (from iron), and bright yellow urine (from vitamin B2, which is harmless).
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, which may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is designed for teenage girls and is not a prenatal supplement. If pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a doctor, who will usually recommend a supplement made for pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Heavy periods, tiredness or paleness may mean anaemia; see a doctor for a blood test.
- Tell your doctor about any long term illness or other medicines.
- A supplement does not replace a balanced diet.
Overdose
Taking many tablets at once can be harmful, mainly because of iron, vitamin A and vitamin D. Signs include vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and drowsiness. Get medical help straight away, especially if a young child has swallowed tablets.
