Indications
This is a prenatal multivitamin and multimineral supplement for women who are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. It helps meet the higher need for nutrients such as Folic Acid, Iron, Iodine, Calcium, Vitamin D, Zinc and B vitamins during this time. Taking Folic Acid before conception and in early pregnancy lowers the risk of neural tube defects (birth defects of the baby’s brain and spine).
How It Works
Folic Acid is needed for the rapid cell growth of the developing baby and for forming the neural tube. Iron helps make extra red blood cells and prevents anaemia. Iodine supports the baby’s brain development and the mother’s thyroid. Calcium and Vitamin D help build the baby’s bones and teeth. Other vitamins and minerals support energy, immunity and general health of mother and baby.
Dosage and Administration
Usually 1 tablet or capsule a day with or after a meal, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Ideally start at least 1 to 3 months before trying to conceive and continue through pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not take other multivitamins at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
Interactions
- Iron, Calcium and Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (Tetracyclines, Ciprofloxacin and similar) and Levothyroxine; take them at least 2 to 4 hours apart.
- Antacids, tea, coffee and milk taken at the same time can reduce iron absorption.
- Folic Acid may interact with some epilepsy medicines such as Phenytoin; tell your doctor.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient
- Iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis, unless a doctor advises it
- High blood calcium or high Vitamin A or D levels
Side Effects
- Nausea, stomach upset or constipation, mainly from iron
- Dark or black stools (harmless, due to iron)
- Bright yellow urine (harmless)
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), or if a child swallows the tablets.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is designed for use before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding at the recommended dose. Do not take extra Vitamin A supplements during pregnancy, as too much Vitamin A can harm the baby. Your doctor may prescribe extra Iron or a higher dose of Folic Acid if needed.
Precautions and Warnings
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- A supplement does not replace regular antenatal check-ups or a healthy diet.
- Iron-containing tablets are a common cause of serious poisoning in young children: keep them well out of reach.
Overdose
Taking many tablets can cause vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and, because of iron, serious poisoning. Seek emergency medical help straight away and take the pack with you.
