Indications
This is a Unani compound herbal preparation (a majoon, a semi-solid herbal paste made with honey or sugar) based mainly on Ushba (Sarsaparilla, the root of a Smilax plant) together with other herbs. In Unani medicine it is described as a natural blood purifier. It is traditionally used for long-standing skin problems such as pimples, boils, itching, rashes and eczema, and for some joint pains that Unani practitioners link to impure blood. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it should not replace proper treatment of skin infections or other diseases.
How It Works
In Unani theory, blood purifiers help the body clear unwanted matter through the skin, urine and bowels. Sarsaparilla root contains plant compounds called saponins that may have mild anti-inflammatory effects and may increase urine flow. Other herbs in such formulas often have mild laxative or cooling actions. How well the whole preparation works has not been properly tested in clinical studies.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Majoon preparations are usually taken once or twice a day with water or milk, often after meals. A course usually lasts a few weeks; do not use it for long periods without advice.
Interactions
- Diuretics (water tablets) such as Furosemide: Sarsaparilla may add to the loss of water and salts.
- Digoxin and Lithium: changes in body water and salts may affect these medicines.
- Medicines for diabetes: the honey or sugar base can raise blood sugar.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless advised by a doctor.
- Serious kidney disease.
- Uncontrolled diabetes, because of the sugar or honey content.
Side Effects
Most people have no problems, but some may have stomach upset, loose stools, nausea or increased urination. Allergic skin reactions are possible.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, or if you have severe stomach pain or continuing diarrhoea.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it during these times unless a doctor advises otherwise.
Precautions and Warnings
- See a doctor for skin problems that are severe, spreading or painful, or that come with fever, as these may need antibiotics or other treatment.
- People with diabetes should check the sugar content and monitor their blood sugar.
- Do not give to children unless the label or a practitioner says it is suitable.
- Buy only properly registered products, as unregistered herbal products may contain contaminants.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea and dehydration. If a large amount has been taken, or if a child has swallowed it, contact a doctor or go to the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
