Indications

A natural latex condom is a thin sheath made from natural rubber latex that is worn over the erect penis during sex. It is used to help prevent pregnancy and to lower the risk of passing on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis.

How It Works

The condom forms a physical barrier. Semen collects in the tip or reservoir instead of entering the partner’s body, so sperm cannot reach an egg. Because skin and body fluids are kept apart, the barrier also reduces the spread of many infections. Some condoms are pre-lubricated to make use more comfortable and to lower the chance of tearing.

Dosage and Administration

  • Use a new condom every time you have sex, from start to finish.
  • Check the expiry date and that the wrapper is not damaged. Open the pack carefully with your fingers, not teeth or scissors.
  • Pinch the tip to squeeze out air and roll the condom all the way down the erect penis.
  • After ejaculation, hold the base of the condom while withdrawing, before the penis softens.
  • Wrap the used condom in paper and throw it in the bin; do not flush it. Never reuse a condom.

Interactions

Oil-based products such as petroleum jelly, baby oil, body lotion, cooking oil and some vaginal creams or pessaries can weaken latex and make the condom break. Use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants. Do not use two condoms at the same time, as friction can cause tearing.

Contraindications

Do not use if you or your partner are allergic to natural rubber latex. People with latex allergy can use condoms made from polyurethane or polyisoprene instead.

Side Effects

Most people have no problems. Some may notice mild irritation, itching or redness, which can be due to the lubricant, the spermicide (if present) or friction. Latex allergy can cause rash, swelling or itching of the genitals.

Get urgent medical help if there is severe swelling, hives, wheezing or difficulty breathing after contact, as this may be a serious allergic reaction. If a condom breaks or slips off, speak to a doctor or pharmacist promptly about emergency contraception and STI testing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Condoms are safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding and can help protect against infections during this time. Water-based lubricant may help if vaginal dryness is a problem while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

No method is 100% effective. Correct use every time gives the best protection. Do not use a condom that is brittle, sticky, torn or past its expiry date. Condoms do not fully protect against infections spread by skin contact outside the covered area, such as herpes or genital warts.

Overdose

Overdose does not apply to this product. If a condom is accidentally left inside the body, remove it gently or see a doctor, and consider emergency contraception.
