Indications
Nickel is a trace element included in small amounts in some multivitamin and mineral supplements. It has no established use as a medicine on its own, and no deficiency illness has been shown in people, because normal food provides more than enough.
How It Works
Nickel may help a few enzymes work and may play a minor role in how the body handles Iron, but it has not been proven to be essential for humans.
Dosage and Administration
Supplements usually contain only a few micrograms (often around 5 mcg) per dose. Take the combination product as directed on its label and do not take extra Nickel separately. Adults should not take more than 1 mg of soluble nickel salts a day from supplements.
Interactions
No important interactions are known at the amounts found in supplements.
Contraindications
- Nickel allergy (nickel contact dermatitis), especially if severe; taking it by mouth may make the rash worse.
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Side effects are unlikely at supplement amounts. People who are allergic to Nickel may notice their eczema or skin rash flare up.
Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
The small amounts in standard multivitamins are not considered a concern in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not take additional Nickel supplements.
Precautions and Warnings
If you have a known nickel allergy, choose a supplement without Nickel or ask a pharmacist for advice. Do not use Nickel products as a treatment for any illness.
Overdose
Large amounts can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and dizziness. Seek medical help if a large amount has been swallowed, particularly by a child.
