Indications

Eucalyptus oil is an essential oil from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. It is used in balms, rubs, liniments and inhalations to ease a blocked nose and chest congestion from colds, and in rubs to relieve minor muscle and joint aches, sprains and stiffness. It is also found in some mouthwashes and insect repellents.

How It Works

Its main active substance, Cineole (eucalyptol), gives a strong cooling smell that makes the nose feel clearer and may help loosen mucus. When rubbed on the skin it acts as a mild counter-irritant: it produces a warm or cool feeling that distracts from deeper muscle or joint pain. It also has mild antiseptic properties.

Dosage and Administration

Use only as directed on the label. Rubs and balms: massage a small amount into the chest, back or painful area 2 to 3 times a day. Inhalation: add a few drops to hot water and breathe in the steam, keeping the eyes closed, or as directed on the label. Do not swallow the oil. Always use the oil diluted; do not apply pure oil to the skin.

Interactions

Serious interactions from use on the skin are unlikely. Swallowed eucalyptus oil can affect the liver’s handling of some medicines. Avoid using several products with strong oils (such as Camphor or Menthol) on the same area at once.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to eucalyptus oil or any ingredient.
  • Babies and young children: do not apply to or near the face or nose, as it can cause breathing spasms; many products are not for children under 2 to 6 years, check the label.
  • Broken, irritated or burnt skin.

Side Effects

Skin redness, burning or irritation may occur, especially with strong products. Inhaling may cause coughing or eye irritation in sensitive people.

Get urgent medical help if the oil is swallowed (even a small amount can be dangerous for children), or if drowsiness, vomiting, breathing difficulty, seizures, swelling of the face or a widespread rash develops.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Occasional use in diluted rubs is generally considered acceptable, but ask your doctor first. Do not swallow it, and do not apply to the breast area while breastfeeding, to avoid exposure of the baby.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, mouth and inside the nose. Do not use with heating pads or tight bandages. Wash hands after use. People with asthma or epilepsy should use with care, as strong vapours can trigger symptoms. If pain or congestion lasts more than 7 days, see a doctor.

Overdose

Swallowing eucalyptus oil is poisonous and can cause burning in the mouth, vomiting, drowsiness, slow breathing, seizures and coma. Do not make the person vomit; seek emergency medical help at once.

Therapeutic Class

Topical counter-irritant and nasal decongestant (aromatic essential oil).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep tightly closed and away from flames.
