Indications

Oil Turpentine (turpentine oil) is a volatile oil distilled from pine resin. In medicine it is used externally, usually together with ingredients such as Menthol, Camphor and Methyl Salicylate in balms, rubs and liniments, to relieve muscle aches, sprains, stiffness, backache and joint pain, and in some chest rubs for the feeling of a blocked nose.

How It Works

Turpentine oil is a counter-irritant (rubefacient): it mildly irritates the skin, causing warmth and redness. This sensation distracts from deeper muscle or joint pain and increases local blood flow. Its strong vapour can give a feeling of clearer breathing.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Rub a small amount gently onto the painful area 2 to 4 times a day, or as directed on the label. Wash hands after use. Do not cover with tight bandages or apply heat pads over it. Do not swallow.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. Do not use with other heating rubs on the same area.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to turpentine or pine products
  • Broken, irritated or infected skin
  • Infants and young children (especially near the face or nose)
  • Never for use by mouth

Side Effects

It may cause skin redness, burning or itching; some people develop an allergic skin rash. Strong vapour can irritate the eyes and airways.

Get urgent medical help if the product is swallowed or gets into the lungs (choking or coughing after swallowing), or if there is blistering, severe skin reaction, swelling of the face or trouble breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is limited safety information. Use only small amounts on small areas during pregnancy, and avoid applying to the chest or breasts while breastfeeding; ask your doctor first.

Precautions and Warnings

Keep away from eyes, mouth, nose and other sensitive areas. Do not use on children without medical advice. Stop if irritation develops. Keep away from flames, as turpentine is flammable. See a doctor if pain lasts more than a week or is severe.

Overdose

Swallowing turpentine is poisonous and can cause burning in the mouth and throat, vomiting, coughing, breathing problems, kidney damage, drowsiness and coma. Do not make the person vomit; seek emergency help at once.
