Indications

Oleoresin Capsicum is a concentrated extract of chilli pepper (Capsicum species) whose main active substance is capsaicin. It is used in creams, gels, ointments and plasters applied to the skin to relieve muscle aches, back pain, sprains, joint pain from arthritis and some nerve pains. It is often combined with other rub ingredients such as Menthol or Methyl Salicylate.

How It Works

Capsaicin acts on pain sensing nerve endings in the skin. At first it causes a warm or burning feeling, then, with repeated use, it makes these nerves less able to send pain signals, partly by using up a pain messenger called substance P. The warming effect also increases blood flow to the area.

Dosage and Administration

For use on the skin only. Apply a thin layer to the painful area and rub in gently, usually up to 3 to 4 times a day or as directed on the label. Wash your hands well with soap straight after use, unless the hands are the area being treated. Full benefit may take one to two weeks of regular use. Do not cover with tight bandages or use with heating pads.

Interactions

  • Do not use on the same area as other heat producing rubs or skin products unless advised.
  • Very little reaches the blood, so interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to chilli peppers or any ingredient.
  • Broken, irritated, sunburnt or infected skin, wounds or eczema.
  • Children under 12 years, unless advised by a doctor.

Side Effects

A warm, burning or stinging feeling and redness where it is applied are common, especially in the first days, and usually lessen with regular use. Sneezing or coughing can occur if residue is breathed in.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe burning or blistering of the skin, signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), or if the product gets into the eyes and causes severe pain that does not settle after rinsing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Only small amounts are absorbed through the skin, but safety in pregnancy is not well established; ask your doctor before use. When breastfeeding, do not apply to the breast area, and ask your doctor first.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Keep away from the eyes, nose, mouth and other sensitive areas. If contact occurs, rinse with plenty of cool water.
  • Avoid hot baths, showers or strong sunlight on the treated area just before or after applying, as burning can increase.
  • Stop use and see a doctor if pain lasts more than 7 days, worsens, or if the joint is red, hot and swollen.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin causes severe burning and redness; wash off with soap and water. If swallowed, it may cause burning in the mouth and stomach, vomiting and diarrhoea; seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Topical analgesic (counter irritant, capsaicin derivative).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the cap tightly closed.
