Indications
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are a purified, concentrated form of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from fish oil. As a prescription medicine they are used, together with diet, to lower very high triglycerides (a type of blood fat). Lower strength products are also used as a dietary supplement to support heart health.
How It Works
EPA and DHA reduce the amount of triglyceride the liver makes and help the body clear fat particles from the blood faster. This lowers blood triglyceride levels.
Dosage and Administration
For very high triglycerides the usual adult dose is 4 g a day, taken as 4 capsules of 1 g once a day or 2 capsules twice a day, with food, or as prescribed. Swallow capsules whole. For general supplement use, follow the label. Keep to a low fat diet and exercise as advised.
Interactions
Omega-3 may slightly increase bleeding time. Use with care with Warfarin, Aspirin, Clopidogrel and other medicines that thin the blood; your doctor may check your clotting more often. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to omega-3 acid ethyl esters or any ingredient
- Use with care, or avoid, if allergic to fish or shellfish
Side Effects
Common effects include burping, fishy taste, indigestion, nausea, stomach discomfort and loose stools. Taking capsules with food helps. Some people get a rash. In people with existing heart rhythm problems, a higher chance of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) has been seen.
Get urgent medical help for a fast or irregular heartbeat with dizziness or breathlessness, unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or trouble breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Omega-3 fatty acids are part of a normal diet, but high prescription doses should be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding only if your doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
Your doctor may check liver tests and cholesterol during treatment. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, a bleeding disorder or heart rhythm problems. Control other causes of high triglycerides, such as diabetes, alcohol use and weight.
Overdose
Taking too much usually causes only stomach upset and loose stools. Seek medical advice if large amounts are taken.
