Indications

Ossein hydroxyapatite (ossein-hydroxyapatite compound) is a calcium supplement made from cow bone. It is used to prevent and treat calcium deficiency and to support bone health in conditions such as osteoporosis (thin, fragile bones), bone loss after menopause or due to long-term steroid use, during fracture healing, and when calcium needs are higher, such as in pregnancy, breastfeeding and growth.

How It Works

It contains calcium and phosphorus in the same mineral form found in natural bone (hydroxyapatite), together with an organic part (ossein) made of collagen and other bone proteins. The calcium is released slowly in the gut, which may reduce sudden rises in blood calcium. The minerals help build and maintain bone, and the organic part is thought to support bone formation, though evidence for extra benefit over other calcium salts is limited.

Dosage and Administration

Take as prescribed or as directed on the label. For the 800 mg tablet, a common adult schedule is 1 to 2 tablets two times a day, taken with water, preferably with or after meals. Many people also need vitamin D, which the doctor may prescribe separately. Children should take it only on medical advice.

Interactions

  • Calcium reduces the absorption of Tetracyclines, Quinolone antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin), Levothyroxine, Bisphosphonates (such as Alendronate) and Iron; take these at least 2 hours apart.
  • Thiazide diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide can raise blood calcium when combined with calcium supplements.
  • High calcium levels can increase the risk of side effects from Digoxin.

Contraindications

  • High blood calcium (hypercalcaemia) or high urine calcium (hypercalciuria).
  • Calcium-containing kidney stones or severe kidney failure.
  • Long-term immobilisation with high urine calcium.
  • Known allergy to any ingredient or to bovine (cow) proteins.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include constipation, bloating, wind, nausea and stomach discomfort.

Get urgent medical help if you develop signs of high calcium, such as severe thirst, passing a lot of urine, nausea and vomiting, confusion, marked tiredness or muscle weakness, or if you have severe pain in the side or back with blood in the urine (a possible kidney stone), or an allergic reaction with swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Calcium needs increase in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and this supplement can be used at the recommended dose when advised by a doctor. Do not take more than recommended.

Precautions and Warnings

Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, a history of kidney stones, sarcoidosis or take vitamin D or other calcium products, as blood and urine calcium may need checking. Drink enough water. Calcium supplements alone do not replace other osteoporosis treatment if your doctor has prescribed it.

Overdose

Taking too much over time may lead to high blood calcium, with thirst, frequent urination, nausea, constipation, confusion and weakness. Stop taking it and contact a doctor.
