Indications
Oteseconazole is an oral antifungal used to reduce how often vaginal yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis) come back in women who have recurrent infections, usually defined as 3 or more episodes in a year. It is used only in women who are not able to become pregnant, such as those who are permanently infertile or post-menopausal.
How It Works
Oteseconazole blocks an enzyme the Candida fungus needs to make ergosterol, an essential part of its cell membrane. Without it the fungus cannot grow. It is designed to target the fungal enzyme more selectively than older azole antifungals, and it stays in the body for a very long time, which helps prevent repeat infections.
Dosage and Administration
Use exactly as prescribed. Treatment is a set course over about 12 weeks: a loading period of capsules over the first days (sometimes together with another antifungal, Fluconazole), followed by one dose once a week for 11 weeks. Take capsules with food and swallow whole. Do not change the schedule without your doctor’s advice.
Interactions
Oteseconazole may increase blood levels of medicines handled by the BCRP transporter, such as Rosuvastatin, so the doctor may adjust or monitor these. Tell your doctor about all medicines, including other antifungals and herbal products.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to Oteseconazole or any ingredient, in women who are able to become pregnant (because it stays in the body for a long time and may harm a baby), during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding.
Side Effects
Headache and nausea are the most common. Others may include indigestion, hot flushes, painful urination and changes in some blood test results (such as liver enzymes). Allergic reactions are uncommon.
Get urgent medical help if you develop a severe rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Oteseconazole must not be used in pregnancy or by women who could become pregnant; animal studies suggest risk to the unborn baby, and the medicine remains in the body for about 2 years. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
Precautions and Warnings
Your doctor will confirm that you cannot become pregnant before starting. Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. Vaginal infections with unusual discharge, pain or fever should be checked to rule out other causes. Complete the full course as directed.
Overdose
There is no specific experience. Seek medical advice; treatment is supportive.
